Kimora Lee Simmons Leaves Baby Phat & Family

It is definitely the end of an era. The queen of fabulosity is leaving her celebrity clothing line: Baby Phat. She tweeted her official leave, which will be on September 1st. She also released a statement:
“After 14 years of conceiving and nurturing Baby Phat, it’s time for me to move on and further expand my other businesses and create a new phenomenon. I adore all those who have faithfully been with me since the beginning.”
Kimora’s legacy in the Simmons clothing empire includes Baby Phat, KLS Collection, Kouture by Kimora and Fabulosity. Although she’s leaving, Kimora ensured her fans that she’s up to another venture, which will take inspiration from the next generation.
“I’m forever dedicated to my family, fans and customers. My inspiration has always come from the fabulous women who have been with me through the years as we’ve grown from young party girls to power players! We’re ready for our next journey together and we’re taking a whole new generation of incredible young women with us. Girl power unite!”
No need for negative speculations, only excitements for the future, because ex-husband/business partner, Russell Simmons helped ensure the brand’s fanatics that the duo will have a joint collaboration.

I seriously can't wait for what's in store. My vote is for couture all the way!

M.A.C. and Rodarte Make Light of Racial Issues

M.A.C. Cosmetics and Rodarte have teamed up for a new makeup line inspired by the deadly border town of Juarez, Mexico. The line that was inspired by the dead female factory workers feature eyeshadow, blush nail polish and lip gloss in shades like "Sleepless", "Factory", "Ghost Town".

When Fashion Bloggers received their press-kits and pre-viewing photos last week, they were outraged. And they began complaining until M.A.C. and Rodarte issued an apology, and promised to donate part of the proceeds to charity. M.A.C. is also planning on changing the names of the collection. And rightly so.

Since 1993, 800 bodies of women and girls, many of them indigenous factory workers have surfaced on the Chihuahuan desert. Considering these unjustified murders, what made Rodarte (2 women designers Kate & Laura Mulleavy) decide it would be a great collection?
The sisters have explained. “We are truly saddened about injustice in Juarez.”
I don’t doubt that the Mulleavy Sisters feel sorry for the factory workers in Juarez, but that didn’t prevent the duo from  exoticizing — and marginalizing — the women in their cosmetics and fashion lines. In the runway show for Rodarte’s newest collection, models in pale foundation and heavy eye makeup donned layered pieces featuring goat hair, chiffon, shearling and lace. Think Olsen twins meet Mexican peasant.
If only Juarez was made up of peasant women. In fact, it is a city of 1.5 million people. The women there don’t herd sheep or look like extras from the set of a trite Mexican period piece. They wear jeans and T-shirts and heels and sneakers like women do in any big city. Let's hope that using stereotypes for fashion is now a thing of the past!

Kmart Hits The Runways

Kmart is promoting their new juniors brand by hosting back-to-school runway shows in Chicago and LA. Their new brands are Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez, Bongo and Rebecca Bonbon.

“The runway shows are designed to show our capabilities and the type of fashions we have,” said Mark Snyder, chief marketing officer of Kmart. “Customers believed we didn’t have enough brands or the right brands. We always had a great selection of private labels. Bongo, Dream Out Loud and Rebecca Bonbon are real brands. Those help customers say, ‘Kmart is changing and adding things to increase its relevance and provide the confidence that it’s on trend.’”

In addition to the new brands, Kmart is “developing microsites for all our apparel offerings and for all consumer segments,” Snyder said. The retailer has “a new engagement with rich media,” Snyder said, referring to a shoppable video for Jaclyn Smith at Kmart.com.

The Clinton Wedding

The much anticipated, interfaith wedding event of the summer has come: Chelsea Clinton wed at Astor Courts estate last night at sunset, wearing a gorgeous Vera Wang (LOVE Vera), while her mom, the secretary of State, wore a fuchsia Oscar de la Renta gown. The St. Regis catered the reception, and La Tulipe Dessert baked a gluten-free wedding cake for hundreds of guests. Chelsea and a visibly moved Bill danced to Frank Sinatra. Apparently, the wedding's estimated costs are between 3-5 million dollars. Image the commission on that wedding?!

British Vogue Editor Supports Bikinis for ALL Ages!

British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman: "I defy anyone claiming there should be an age limit on bikini wearing. Certainly with the loss of muscle tone and wear and tear that women's bodies suffer as time passes, the bikini becomes an increasingly difficult option the older we become. But as in so many things, the divide between one-piece and bikini wearers is less to do with age than attitude." [Daily Mail UK]

Vogue Sues a Canadian Fashion Show?

VICTORIA — Vogue magazine lawyers have threatened a Victoria fashion show, saying the name of the charity event breaches one of their trademarks.
Dozens of downtown businesses were set to show off their new fashions at Victoria Fashion's Night Out on Thursday.
But when Vogue magazine heard the event's name, lawyers sent a letter threatening a lawsuit if the name wasn't changed immediately.
Last year, Vogue organized Fashion's Night Out in New York City. The event is planned again for this year, and will be held in cities throughout the world "from Brooklyn to Brazil."
"Our client did not consent to use of its Fashion's Night Out trademark by your organization or its members and is extremely concerned by this unauthorized use of its intellectual property," said a letter from lawyer Leigh Walters, from Sim Lowman Ashton and McKay.
Organizers, who received the letter a day before the event, are now trying to change the name to Victoria's Fashion Night, said lawyer David Mulroney.

I guess Anna Wintour does control the world, and free speech too!

Hottest Summer Fashion Trend: Yellow Fever

Catch Yellow Fever!

Not the disease silly! The fashion essential for summer 2010. Checking out the haute couture and RTW (that's ready-to-wear for the non-fashion people out there) runways this year, it is blatantly obvious that yellow will be HUGE!
Anyone who is anyone will be wearing yellow this spring and summer so you might wanna have a look-see. One of the greatest things about yellow is that its such a happy and bright color. Just looking at yellow fashions automatically cheers me up. Besides, what could be depressing about the color yellow?
Whats especially popular this year is light yellow and greenish-yellow. The darker and super "Walmart" yellows are done with! (I know, fashion can be so fickle) Lime yellow is also in, if you don't know what that is, you probably wouldn't want to wear it anyway so don't worry about that. Another fantastic thing about yellow is that it is universally flattering! (Which most people don't believe because they pick the wrong yellow!)
Here's a quickie guide to wearing yellow for your skintone:
Pale: Dark yellow, mustard yellow, and very pale yellows. Avoid neon-bright and primary color yellow which will only make you look more pale.
Medium and Olive: Go for opposite ends of the spectrum. You should reach for lemon yellows, bold yellows, and can even go for super bright yellow which will make your skin glow.
Dark: Reach for those golds. Golds will bring out the delicious gold tones. You also have immense luck because you can pretty much wear whatever yellow you'd like, and look fabulous. The only yellow I'd avoid is neon, it may look too jarring since it'll be a sharp contrast to your skintone.
Let's take a look at every possible way you can incorporate beautiful yellows into your spring/summer wardrobe!

Celebrities Are Banned from Fashion Week!?

For this upcoming New York Fashion Week, Marc Jacobs has decided to ban celebrities from coming to his show. Jacobs says that he does not want to see all A-lister celebs taking up all the coveted seats at this weeks prestigious fashion event. He has said he thinks having them are "boring". He revealed to the New York Post:
"I'm not into the celebrity thing...like we used to. That's boring."
The designer also admitted he felt "awkward" at his fashion show during last September's Fashion Week when Madonna came backstage post-show not having been invited.
He said: "She came backstage, and I was like, "What do you do with her now? Because it's not like she was invited."
Designers Rodarte and Alexander Wang are following suit; as designers realize they need to attract new customers.
An industry insider said: "The industry is really suffering right now, and there's a need to reach a bigger audience in order to increase sales."
While celebrities won't be invited to the show, they could always watch it on the internet as Jacobs and Calvin Klein have announced they will be streaming their upcoming runway show on the web.
"Having Fashion Week online makes these designers universal, which is a huge benefit to their lines."

Great Designing Queen is Dead
British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, a young, influential designer making his name in fashion history was found dead in his home today (Thursday, Feb 11). He was just 40 years old. Although not official, evidence points to suicide. The British police say the death was not a murder. His fashion was dramatic, edgy, distinct and loved by many celebs such as Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Despite acclaim, McQueen cherished his privacy, often turning down interviews and shunning the spot-light. He was well known for his dramatic pieces and detailed-tailoring and was recognized as one of the best English designers.

“McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs,” said Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue.
Hal Rubenstein, a fashion director for InStyle magazine, said McQueen started out tough and angry — in his work and attitude — but softened over time as he felt more appreciated by the industry.

McQueen recently posted tweets on his Twitter page showing signs of sadness over the loss of his mother on Feb 2. However, he did say that "Life must go on!!!!!!!!" He also added that he had an awful week and that he had to pull himself together.

A scheduled presentation of McQueen's secondary label, McQ for New York Fashion Week is certainly now cancelled.

Oh Mr. McQueen - Who will celebs and fashionistas alike turn to now when they need an outrageously gorgeous and dangerous outfit at hand?  What will be of our Lady Gaga without you?

RIP Mr. Alexander McQueen. The fashion world salutes you.

The Jersey Shore has a "SITUATION"!
The Jersey Shore show of MTV has become a national phenomenon. Granted, they've reached fame not so much in holding the high level respect of most Americans, but more so:
We LOVE to watch them do stupid things and get completely trashed. (Plus the Bar Fights!)

Just yesterday, it was rumored that the Jersey Shore cast is in a SITUATION with MTV.  According to our sources, MTV signed contracts with cast members stating their restrictions on 'bar appearances,' limiting them to two per week (They're making up to $7500 a night - just to party at a club). Naturally, acting in accordance with the 'American Way' these Guidos/ettes are just trying to reap the FULL benefits of their 15 minutes of fame!

2010 Miss America Newly Crowned

Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron won the 2010 Miss America title Saturday night after strutting in a skintight yellow dress, belting Beyonce's "Listen" from "Dreamgirls" and telling kids they should get outside more often.
Cameron, a 22-year-old from Fredericksburg, Va., won a $50,000 scholarship and the crown in Las Vegas after a pageant that started with 53 contestants. She outlasted her opponents in swimsuit, evening gown, talent and interview competitions.
Cameron is broadcast journalism student at Virginia Commonwealth University, and wants to become an anchor.
When asked during the interview portion of the competition her thoughts on fighting childhood obesity, Cameron said parents should curb television and video games.
"We need to get our kids back outside, playing with sticks in the street like I did when I was little," she said. "Expand your mind, go outside and get to see what this world is like."
Cameron said her win was a testament to her family's strength.
"You can be and become anything that you want to be, even Miss America," she said.
Miss California Kristy Cavinder was the first runner-up, winning $25,000.
The young women who came out on stage at the beginning of the pageant and danced to "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas are from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
After a week of preliminary competition, they each introduced themselves to the crowd Saturday at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
"From the home of the Governator, I am here to pump you up," Cavinder said as she was introduced.
The judges, the public and contestants themselves then trimmed the field over the next two hours.
Actor and "Extra" host Mario Lopez hosted the 89-year-old pageant with help from Clinton Kelly of TLC's "What Not to Wear." The pageant was broadcast live on TLC.
The panel of judges included radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, actress Vivica Fox, musician Dave Koz, Miss America 2002 Katie Harman, gymnast Shawn Johnson and former "American Idol" finalist Brooke White. Comedian Paul Rodriguez was set to be a judge, but organizers said he pulled out because of a family emergency.
Cameron, crowned by 2009 Miss America Katie Stam, will embark on a yearlong run with the title to represent the organization and raise awareness for her chosen platform.
Cameron, Cavinder and Miss Michigan Nicole Blaszczyk each won $2,000 earlier in the week for winning talent competitions among three split fields of contestants. Miss Oregon CC Barber, Miss New York Alyse Zwick and Miss Puerto Rico Mimi Pabon each won $1,000 in nightly swimsuit competitions.
Miss Oklahoma Taylor Treat won the $6,000 Quality of Life award, given to the contestant judged to excel most in volunteerism and community service.
Scores based on a week of preliminary competitions were added to Saturday's competitions to determine the winner. Each judge ranked their five favorites in order, and their ballots were used to pick the winner.
In all, the Miss America Organization awarded $340,000 in scholarships at the national level. The organization says its national, state and local chapters gave more than $45 million last year in cash and scholarships.
The pageant was preceded by a one-hour television special on TLC, "Miss America: Behind the Curtain."
The contestants picked 12 women from their own ranks who faced a public vote for one of three spots among the 15 finalists. Stam, a Seymour, Ind., native, was one of four finalists chosen by viewers last year.
The crowning of a Miss America began in 1921 as a publicity stunt to persuade tourists on Atlantic City's Boardwalk to stick around after Labor Day.

Missoni Goes Beyond This World in Milan Fashion Week

Milan - Instead of a traditional runway show, Missoni's 2010 Fall/Winter collection was staged as a static presentation on the evening before, in an outdoor space that felt like part barn and part patio. Sarah Jessica Parker Gets Hired?

Rumor has it Sarah Jessica Parker is being considered for a consulting job with Halston. There were talks in the past about Parker being the new face of Halston but it might turn out to be much more. There are talks about her working for Halston as a design director or creative director. It certainly is believable, considering SJP is one of America's trend-setting celebs who also has a clothing line called Bitten.
A source tells us that Ms. Parker may be getting a sort of consulting gig with Halston.

Last September, E!Online News claimed Parker - pictured on the set of the 'Sex and the City' sequel wearing a white dress from the Halston Heritage Spring 2010 collection - was in talks over a major endorsement deal with the coveted label.

Another source added: "There's quite a lot of vintage Halston in the movie."
SJP is setting out to be not only the face of Halston but also apart of the design team?!
So lucky!

Plus Size Model Graces 'V' Magazine

Plus-size model Crystal Renn is featured in V Magazine's upcoming Size Issue in an editorial that illustrates one size does not fit all. The spread shot by photographer Terry Richardson and styled by Mel Ottenberg, placed Renn alongside a 'traditional body-type model', Jacquelyn Jablonski in identical fashion pieces and poses. Both ladies are five-foot-nine, but Renn's dimensions are 36-31-41, while Jablonski is 32-24-34.

Renn told the AP in an interview, "I'd like to see everyone take on the attitude that there are women of all different shapes and sizes as 'the beauty ideal,' and that it's not one type or another. There are women who are naturally a size 2--you can't forget them, and that's discrimination the other way. All women bring something different to the table and we have to appreciate them all."

The engaging centerpiece of the magazine’s “Size” issue features several voluptuous women clad in skimpy swimsuits, bra tops and low-slung jeans. The models flaunt bulging tummies, powerful thighs and fleshy midsections — with love handles intact.
The magazine’s online preview on Models.com has caused much buzz and some heated debates. Some readers praised the decision to highlight models larger than size 2 while others castigated the editors as following the lead of more-conservative fashion magazines, which habitually ghettoize a large-size population that ought to be featured in every issue.
Further fanning the argument were those pointing out that plus models tended to measure a size 12 or 14 — hardly representative of the “real” plus-size woman, who typically wears a size 16 or 18.
But many such discussions were rendered moot by a handful of bloggers who simply preferred to look away, often citing Karl Lagerfeld's views; “No one wants to see curvy women.”
On stands Jan. 16, tell us what you think!

H&M Destroys and Dumps Unused Clothing

On Wednesday the 6th, the NYTimes reported new and unworn merchandise from H&M and Wal-Mart found, destroyed in trash bags on 35th Street. Following ten attempts by the NYT, H&M didn't comment on yesterday's article, until a spokeswoman finally offered an explanation today:
“It will not happen again,” said Nicole Christie, a spokeswoman for H&M in New York. “We are committed 100 percent to make sure this practice is not happening anywhere else, as it is not our standard practice.”
Ms. Christie said it was H&M’s policy to donate all unworn clothing to charitable groups. She said that she did not know why the store on 35th Street was slashing the clothes, and that the company was checking to make sure that none of its other stores were doing so.
A spokeswoman for Wal-Mart said basically the same thing — she didn't know why their clothes were destroyed and dumped when it's company policy to donate them.
The CUNY grad student, Cynthia Magnus, who discovered the bags of clothes and tipped off the NYT wrote H&M's headquarters in Sweden but received no response.
What makes the entire situation even more embarrassing is that H&M just launched a Garden Collection made of sustainable, organic, and recycled materials such as PET bottles and textile waste. Can we say hypocrites?

Lindsay Lohan: Victim of Fashion Robbery!?

We get news today that Lindsay Lohan's 6126 fashion sketches has been stolen as reported by Us Magazine.

The thief is Lohan's friend (assumingly now, former friend), Patrick 'Pootie' Aufdenkamp, who reportedly, is planning to use the sketches for his very own fashion collection.
"He is now running off trying to do his own line and telling people he's going to Fashion Market Week in NYC on Feb. 18 to debut his line," a friend of the actress tells the source.
"It's horrible. He was her best friend. He has always used her, and she's been warned to never trust him. Lindsay is a good friend and likes to see the good in people. She didn't want to believe how bad Patrick's energy was, and how false his friendship has always been with her."
Lohan has opened up about the drama, telling the magazine, "I should have known better" and that she was no longer pals with 'Pootie.'
As for Aufdenkamp, he tweeted just yesterday "Everyone will know the truth soon enough," and "And I mean everything!"

What's strange is why anyone would want to steal those Lohan sketches.

Did we so soon forget the train-wrecked disaster that is called Emanuel Ungaro Spring/Summer wear 2010 in Paris? Let us remember the sequin pasties, paulty fabrics and shoddy designs when Ungaro hired Lohan to work on this collection as a muse.
All in all, I can't wait to see Aufdenkamp's line and the comparisons that will surely be made when it comes out!
Stay tuned...

Tyra Is Not the 'New Oprah'

Earlier today, supermodel turned producer, Ms. Tyra Banks announced on her twitter that the Tyra Show is coming to an end.

Launched in 2005, the show was only doing so well before moving to the CW. There the show was a greater success but not enough to keep the show running through season 6. However, Ms. Banks insisted the decision to leave was hers. Ms. Banks talks of the excitement of leaving, ready to dabble in more exciting feature film work, without revealing further details of future plans.

Before leaving, Ms. Banks gave a shoutout to Oprah, saying "Before I go, I have to pay homage to the ultimate Queen of Talk, Oprah, who made a huge impact on my life by giving me my first shot in daytime TV," Banks wrote. "We all know she announced that her last year with her talk show will be in the 2010-2011 season. We will all miss her show so much. And to you Oprah: You have had, and continue to have, such an amazing impact on me. I salute you."

Daily Fashion Tidbit #3

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE FASHION MAGAZINES

1. Vogue: A must-have. Its classic, and really does focus on fashion to the core. It provides an easy but witty read for fashionistas of all ages and backgrounds. It is considered the world's most influential magazine, so essentially it dictates the latest trends! Vogue is best known for its following of high-fashion and high society events.
Difficulty: 6/10
2. W: A larger than life (literally, very large) fashion conscious magazine with an artistic focus. Many of the innovative features, articles and photographs will have you amazed. Nudity should be expected! A wide range of New York and London High Society is covered. Must love art and digital photography! If you like living dangerously, this is it for you! My pick for best 'coffee-table' magazine.
Difficulty: 8/10
3. Women's Wear Daily: A fashion industry trade journal known for being the ultimate consultant for the fashion industry. This is a hardcore high end fashion couture magazine, also referred to as the 'fashion bible'. Most relevant for those who know or work, or have interest in the fashion industry.
Difficulty: 10/10
4. Harpars Bazaar: A sophisticate magazine originally intended for the upper echelon of society. It is a source for fashion for the well dressed, sophisticated, classy shopper who can afford shocking price tags. It is a great place to get ideas to dress from all over the world in a modern way, even if just a little snobby.
Difficulty: 7/10
5. Vanity Fair: A 'Hollywood' Fashion Magazine focused on trends, celebrities and everything Hollywood. Pushes the envelope as far as some photographs are concerned, but the styles and fashion is very wearable. Lots of celebrity and society display, with decent articles.
Difficulty: 6/10
6. Elle: Women's Fashion magazine which focuses on fashion, beauty and health. Globally, the most popular and very innovative and helpful in breaking down styles and trends for us regular folk. Recently stepped up their game in terms of the high fashion layouts, better photographs, but with similar down to earth articles and great fashion tips for novices. A steal!
Difficulty: 3/10
7. InStyle: One of the broadest fashion magazines out there for women of all ages, shapes, colors. By broad I mean they cover fashion, health, beauty, travel, food, living, entertainment and celebrities. They have distinctive themes and are very conscious about the current affairs and its influences fashion. Always filled with handy tips and easy guides for people to incorporate trends into their everyday wardrobes. Easy to read, use, and view.
Difficulty: 2/10

Daily Fashion Tidbit #2

Winter Boot Trend: Over-the-knee

What's the one must-have for the 2010 winter season? Over-the-knee boots.
Now before shying away from this dramatic, thrilling fashion statement, I'll remind you that its fairly simple to pull off!

Tips for Beginners:
1. Try pairing one with somewhat tight jeans or pants.  They would help make the look more seamless and put-together.
2. Don't purchase a pair that has too much sheen, sparkle, shine, glitter etc.  Boots with that much excitement and drama are enough without extra 'bling.'
3. When wearing them with dresses, keep the dress at an appropriate length; around 3-4 inches above the boots, max.  We want a high-fashion look, not trashy.
4. Pull your whole look together with a long coat.  This will 'class' up the look and still showcase your boots as the main attraction.

Happy Shopping Fashionistas!
